Whatcom Dream History
(pictured above: Bob Soltis, former Board member and John Shuravloff, TWD graduate and Co-Director)
Since 2000, The Whatcom Dream (TWD ) has worked with individuals and families in the Roosevelt, Ferndale, Lynden, North Bellingham, Downtown, and Happy Valley communities, helping individuals reach their dreams through the gift of financial literacy. TWD also has an ongoing classes at the Whatcom County Jail where we teach a customized curriculum designed to help people make a successful venture back into mainstream society upon release.
We help people discover the principals of budgeting, basic financial management, debt repayment, credit, personal and financial assets, and goal setting. Our mentors walk alongside them as they adopt these principles and skills into their own lives.
TWD connects our participants with other organizations, associations and agencies and journeys with them as many secure employment, overcome substance/chemical addiction, repay debts, start small businesses, and purchase homes for the first time. The Roosevelt community of Bellingham - where TWD got its start – in the Roosevelt Park Apartment laundry room at 1800 Texas St. is on the road to improvement through an active neighborhood association, healthy connections, and enthusiastic alumni from The Whatcom Dream. It is no longer the highest crime neighborhood in Whatcom County. Lower crime rates one neighborhood at a time is one of our main objectives at The Whatcom Dream!
